Warlock is one of the most popular classes in WoW, mainly because they seem to be able to do almost anything: easy solo leveling, tanking with their pet, bursting high DPS (damage per second), and using their annoying DoT (damage over time) to own virtually any PvP match. 1. Races
There are 4 Alliance races and 5 Horde races that you could choose to play a Warlock. That is a lot of choices, but there are several races that can provide you with various advantages in some specific areas. Here are the races:

Alliance
- Gnome: if you like cool appearance, obviously Gnome isn’t an option. However, they do have increased intellect, which could give you higher mana pool and spellpower.
- Human: possess Escape and Stealth Detection; they are invaluable skills in PvP. They don’t possess any specific abilities to enhance leveling speed though.
Horde
- Orc: if you love to play with your pet a great deal, selecting Orc can increase the damage done by your pet. Orc can also resist stun to some point.
- Undead: can get rid of sleep and charms. These abilities are mainly valuable in PvP.
2. Talent Build and Abilities
As usual, there are 3 talent trees to choose from and all of them demand different playing style.
Affliction Build
As an Affliction Warlock, your main spells are Drains, Fear, and your DoT spells. Your pet won’t be as strong as a Demonology warlock’s pet, but it only need to buy you time until the enemy dies from your DoT spells. The following are a few important talents and abilities in this build:
- Unstable Affliction: a huge damage DoT spell with extra “bonuses” for anyone fool enough to dispel it.
- Shadow Mastery: enhance your shadow damage by 25%.
- Potent Affliction: boost all periodic Shadow damage you deal.
Demonology Build
You have high damage spells, strong pet, and can turn yourself into a demon. Below are several important talents and abilities for this build:
- Metamorphosis: you change into a demon for 30 second and get numerous power ups.
- Hand of Gul’dan: summon meteor that caused surrounding opponents to be weaker against your demons.
- Immolate: instantaneous damage spell with DoT after it.
Destruction Build
Similar to a mage, you will burst high damage spells to destroy your adversaries. Here are several essential talent and abilities in this build:
- Immolate: deliver instant fire damage that followed by DoT.
- Chaos Bolt: send chaotic fire at the opponent.
- Conflagrate: consume immolate effect on the opponent and burst instant damage.
- Incinerate: burst fire damage with some additional damage if the target is affected by immolate spell.
Regardless of the constant changes in Wow, Affliction warlock remains the most popular choice. It’s best to stick to the Affliction build for quick leveling. You might not burst high damage right away, but you have high survivability and will never deplete all of your mana.
3. How You Level Up Your Character
In a normal server, I don’t know any other effective way to level up your Warlock aside from questing and going through dungeons. If you can accept and finish several quests simultaneously whenever feasible, you already on the right track. Dungeons may come once in a while for some extra XP and gears.
